Wednesday by the numbers

16,000 - the sets of body armor being recalled by the Department of Army, according to military.com.

19 - the predicted temperature for North Florida tomorrow morning. We have activated the 3 "p"s plan: pipes, plants and pets. All will be covered or inside tonight.

2 - the number of bird feeders that need to be filled before the cold snap.

1 - inch, the amount snow on the ground at Ft. Bragg today.

Lots of interesting news coming out of Ft. Bragg today, but I have to check with my NCOIC to see if any of it is post worthy. Hint, hint: read the post about the Army requiring soldiers to carry too much weight.

I have heard that many troops were assigned very old body armor and there is a serious need for updated/ new & safer equipment.
I think this is an issue that is highly under-recognized and it is something that should have more attention drawn to it. I think this is something that the Government really needs to think about putting more money into, especially as we up our troop numbers in Afghanistan.

I heard about the body armor also. What I can't understand is why President Obama is asking DOD to cut 10% from the budget when our sons and daughters are carrying to much weight and faulty body armor.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Carter had 1/2 of the lightbulbs on all military bases unscrewed so as to save energy....

I'm waiting for Obama's equivalent.

Pops,

I hadn't heard about the DoD cuts. Doesn't make sense in this environment.

And H.L.,

The readiness of the equipment is huge issue. The up-armored Humvees don't last long. During the last deployment, the soldiers ran out of AA batteries, so the parents/spouses/and relatives had to send them.
