I diligently kept a journal during most of his military career and still do today. So I will probably pull some of the entries out for The One Percenters.
Five years.
Of course, we were lucky:
- Mark made it back from two tours alive and in one piece.
- He was assigned to a unit that, if not the best, is among the best in the Army. Well-trained and led by officers and NCOs who made the right decisions in the most difficult of circumstances and brought every one home...twice.
- We have met some extraordinary people during the journey and we are better for it.
- And somehow we ended up with a house full of delightful but gaseous Aussies.

'dad,
Well written my friend and Happy Anniversary to you and your family. I can't believe it's been that long. If you look at my picture on Mark 1:11 at the reunion, before he left I didn't have any grey hair. LOL. Well maybe a little.
Being selfish is what we parents do and then we suck it up and let the children do what they feel they must. We hid it most of the time and only let it out that we a scared as hell for them to the house boss (wife) or Priest or Rabbi. Never to the child, that would be unmanly. Never fear with that emotion there are thousands of us who walk the walk with you.
Bless you and the family,
Pops
